Lynchburg: Sad State Of WWOD Radio

My first job, alongside a dishwasher/cook at Pizza Inn, was as a DJ at Lynchburg's country WWOD-AM in 1979-80. I was 16. Several years ago, the station went dark and since, the building has been in a persistent state of decay. Not even the grass is being cut anymore.

What makes this state of affairs particularly... well, stupid, is that a couple years ago, a developer wanted to buy the land—where the station is based and the long stretch of acreage behind it where the antenna once stood—to cut a new street for residential homes. The neighbors fought it tenaciously and finally, the developer abandoned the idea.

Just deserts. Today, those dumbass residents have instead, a building that is crumbling to the ground and a favorite destination of Lynchburg gangs—yes, gangs, for real. Nothing like short-sighted judgment, you bumbling boobs.

  1. Oh My Goodness!! I SO remember WWOD! Before moving to Sarah Lynch Place...my family and I lived on Indian Hill Road from the age of 4 up until 6th grade. I remember walking with my friends to Boonsboro Shopping Center to get ice cream. That building was always a reminder that we were almost home. I think I even won a Statler Brothers album from a call-in contest....Beth Joyce Tyre
