Tony Nominations: 'Sister Act' Garners Five Nods!

The 2011 Tony Award nominees were announced today, marking a refreshing trend. In the recent past, any Hollywood actor who graced the Great White Way almost automatically garnered a Tony nod.

Among the alleged "snubs" this time around: Daniel Radcliffe in How To Succeed In Business; Chris Rock, who headlined Motherfucker with the Hat; and Robin Williams, in Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. Ben Stiller, who is a tiresome one-trick pony onscreen, was thankfully omitted from the revival of House of Blue Leaves, along with Kathleen Turner, star of short-lived drama High, and Kiefer Sutherland of That Championship Season.

Al Pacino and Frances McDormand, who are undeniably talented actors, both received nominations. Insiders suggest that the Tonys are reacting to last year's awards for (seriously limited) movie stars Scarlett Johanssen and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

In any case, as a queen who saw just one Broadway show over the past year, I'm hardly qualified to have much more of an opinion. I'm just delighted that Sister Act fostered four potential awards, including Musical of the Year. Other nods: Patina Miller for Best Musical Actress, Victoria Clark for Best Musical Actress in a Featured Role, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

The overall leader was The Book of Morman, ironically written by Hollywood insiders and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, whose 14 nominations include Best Musical, Direction and Best Leading Actor, as well as Featured Actor and Actress.

The telecast airs Sunday, June 12, on CBS. The full list of nominees is after the jump.

NYC Vintage Image Of The Day: 1970s' Times Square Dissonance

This dramatic photo of a senior New York citizen standing in front of the gay burlesque Gaiety Theatre was taken by German photographer Dirk Reinartz in 1974 at the corner of  46th Street and Broadway, located on the second floor of the famed Howard Johnson's restaurant in Times Square.
The Gaiety opened in 1975 and, despite then Mayor Guliani's clean sweep of the neighborhood in the mid-1990s, managed to remain open until March 2005, when the building was sold. Likewise, HoJo's closed that July. Today, Guliani would be thrilled to know that the building was demolished to make room for national chain American Eagle.

William Levy's Sexy Star Turn In JLo's 'I'm Into You': Here It Is!

At last! The music video for Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Into You" is out and proud!!! William Levy steams up the beach scenes, which is almost enough to distract from the sing-song absurdity of what is simply another bad song from JLo. To make matters worse, Lil Wayne contributes more than the requisite intro rap; he hijacks verse after verse. And then there's the dance breakdown... oh, bless her heart. I will never understand who convinced Lopez she has the moves. No matter. Turn the volume down low and enjoy the sexy scenery. JLo looks gorgeous... as does her leading man.

May Hunk Of The Month: Jesse Metcalfe

Jesse Metcalfe, the 32-year-old green-eyed hunk we first met in 2004 as Gabrielle's lover in season one of "Desperate Housewives," has had a spotty career since, leading in the teen flick "John Tucker Must Die" in 2006 and then, except for a few roles on TV and in movies that failed to connect on a mass-appeal basis, seemingly disappearing from the screen.

But shooting began last month in Texas for a TNT remake of nighttime '80s' soap "Dallas," in which Metcalfe will play Christopher, the grown-up son of Bobby and Pam Ewing. Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy have both signed on to reprise their roles as J.R. and Bobby, respectively. If the telecast is anything like the original, we should be seeing plenty of Jesse sans a shirt. Yee haw!

NYC Vintage Image Of The Day: Flatiron Building

The iconic 22-story Flatiron Building was the only skyscraper north of 14th Street when it was completed in 1902. The Beaux-Arts style building sits on a triangular block at Fifth Avenue, Broadway and East 22nd Street and borders Madison Square Park.

Extreme winds around its sharp corners created the expression, "23 Skidoo," when cops would shout at dudes for looking up women's dresses as they caught the breeze.While Donna Mae was in town, we walked from High Line Park on the West Side through Chelsea and over to the Flatiron District. The photos below, taken by Mae and meese, were edited using High Digital Resolution enhancement.

Perhaps We May Now Put The Inertia Of Sept. 11, 2001 To Rest?

With bin Laden at last assassinated, I hope to god that as the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 approaches—after 3,519 days—we may at last take a step forward, instead of drowning in another media blitz of inertia and self pity.

Since the World Trade Center continues to be only a dozen stories from the ground, it's time for America to lift its own spirits. Godspeed.
