Gay Marriage: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

It was a year ago today that California became the second U.S. state after Massachusetts (in 2004) to legalize same-sex marriage. Oh, but wait, they took that away from us, didn't they, thanks to Prop 8. To date, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the only among the 50 states to permit same-sex couples to marry. Vermont and Maine allege to join the cause later this year.

In New York, our impotent Gov. David Paterson promised to address the issue a couple months ago, but quoted as saying that he already had enough to worry about without tackling such a controversial issue. As a black, blind man, I'd love to know how he'd have ever reached such status without the many laws passed protecting his standing.

And then there's the president of the United States. Much like Clinton before him, Obama made lofty promises to attract the gay vote during his campaign, only to falter on 100% of them once in office. I get it: The nation's economy is in shambles, but to assure Americans that the absurdity of "Don't Ask Don't Tell" would finally be revoked—and then to look the other way as heralded top officials serving his administration with honor were dismissed because of the policy—and say nothing, smacks of heresy.

Great article on Huffington Post about the hypocrisy. But quite simply, what dismays me more than anything is that our black president never would have stood a prayer of a chance of advancement without decades of civil rights precedence before him. Wouldn't you think he would have a modicum of respect for other minorities fighting for their rights? So far, he garners a failing grade on the social causes that Democrats were once known for championing. Is Larry Craig that much more of a hypocrite?
