Jordin Sparks: 'Battlefield'

So anyone noticed what I don't write about on The Smoking Gun? Since exiting Billboard at the end of March, I've given myself a breather from commenting on pop music. After all, that's what I did for a living for 14 years... so of late, I've been more focused on photogs, handsome men, NYC and pretty much anything but popular music. I don't mean to sound snarky, but why give it up for free, when my word used to be worth something—and hopefully one day, will be again.

So the silence is broken... Jordin Sparks' new single "Battlefield" is everything it had to be to propel a highly talented but middlin'-imaged "American Idol" victor beyond her solo hit "Tattoo" (I don't count "AI" drudge "This Is My Now") and fab duet with Chris Brown, "No Air," which, let's face it, was a hit because of his presence.

No long-winded review here—still not ready to go there—but suffice it to say, her career is saved with this single. I have no doubt that again, Jive chief Barry Weiss has found the perfect vehicle to spark Sparks' career to sophomore success. Aggressive, driving percussion, the catchy tinkle of piano and a great hook... yup, a hit. (Thanks, Andy!)
