Earlier this week, when
Leonard Barton showed me the painting in his Southampton
Bravura Gallery, “Madonna and Child With Gas Masks” (1938, Nahum “Chuck” Tschacbasov [1899-1984]), I was alarmed by its disturbing imagery. Leonard remarked, “You can look at it or you can have ‘intellectual’ intercourse with it.” That led to further conversation and a look at several other
Tschacbasov works in his collection. See his comments below.
