According to The New York Times, the unemployment rate surged to 9.7% in August, "signaling that joblessness and financial anxiety are likely to endure for many months." Altogether now: Well, duuuuuh.
Dean Baker, director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, said in the article, “Compared to anything else, this is just a horrible report. The rate of decline is slowing, but it’s not going to stop. We’re likely on a path toward more than 10% unemployment.”
At this point, it's hard to believe that since May, I have already exhausted more than half of my state-granted unemployment benefits—with just more than $5,000 paid out—mind you, after contributing to the system since my first job in 1983... working as a pizza cook, then in college for the school newspaper, where I also paid taxes toward unemployment; and of course, ever since I joined the fulltime working world in 1984. So for the past =25= years of contributing toward unemployment, now that I need it, I am granted all of $10,400 total before my benes run out. Isn't that sweet?
