The annual contest took place at the Las Vegas Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.
Miss Oklahoma Betty Thompson came in second while Miss New York Kaitlyn Monte placed third. Kaeppeler replaces the youngest Miss America in history, last year's victor Teresea Scanlan, 17, from Nebraska.
