Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary Adds 'F-Bomb' To 2012 Entries
The 2012 print edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, published Tuesday, now includes "F-bomb," "sexting" and "man cave" among about 100 new terms added to the reference. Kory
Stamper, an associate editor for Merriam-Webster, told AP that "F-bomb" is "very visually evocative. It's not just the F-word. It's F-bomb. You know that it's going to cause a lot of
consternation and possible damage."
"Brain cramp," "bucket list," "energy drink," "life coach" and "aha moment," were also added to the 114-year-old print edition of the dictionary, as well as "flexitarian," "obesogeniccopernicium," "systemic risk," "craft beer," "e-reader," "game changer," "gastropub," "geocaching," "shovel-ready" and "tipping point." Online, hundreds of new entries are included each year.
In 2011, "tweet," "bromance" and "cougar" were among them. No word on whether fuck is also included by Merriam-Webster. *

Who Knew: The High Line Has A Homo History
I suppose it makes sense: The area along the now swanky raised park known as the High Line in
the Meatpacking District (all too ironic, eh?) used to be the same
nabe that offered New York's most deliciously grimy gay haunts, like Spike, the original Eagle and Roxy.
A new book, "High Line: The Inside Story of New York City's Park in the Sky," tells the storied past of
the project and documents its history and the completed park in photos.
Last week, its authors Joshua David and Robert Hammond, co-founders of the Friends of the High Line, offered a discussion based on the book, "Behind the Bushes: The Secret Homo History of the High Line," which covered the historical and contemporary relationship between gay men and changing neighborhoods, preservation and design—and how the gay community has influenced and been influenced by the High Line. More about the book here. *

Smarty Pants: New York Public Library's Main Branch
fair, the New York Public Library's main branch behind Bryant Park, Boxer's bar, Beauty Bar lounge... and finally home for din din. When we got to the city from BK post-carousel, we walked from 59th Street criss-crossing down to 14th Street. We figure we covered
three-plus miles on foot. Here, NYPL, the largest public library in North America, which opened in 1911, and its beautiful, historic third-floor Main Reading Room, which extends a half-acre and has seating for 768, with 25,000 volumes along the walls. As you see in the right pic, it has hardly changed in 100 years.

'Cooking With Pooh': Really? No, Really?

Talk about Pooh Tales! The remarkably titled
Cooking With Pooh (Yummy Tummy Cookie Cutter Treats) really should have gone back to the drawing board at the publishing house, methinks. Pooh brownies? Pooh cheese logs? Pooh jerky?
Mmm, imagine the possibilities! The descriptor on amazon offers barely a hint of irony: "This perfect combination of a book and activity in a reusable box offers step-by-step directions for making cookies on sticks(!), pizzas and sandwiches, edible holiday ornaments and more." I can hardly contain myself.

Author Whiffs Up Clever Idea For NYC Scratch-N-Sniff Book
Smell something funny? Amber C. Jones is publishing a 40-page scratch-n-sniff book, New York, Phew York: A Scratch-N-Sniff Adventure,
offering an olfactory jaunt through NYC. Written in rhyming couplets, it follows a family that comes to New York and is given a city tour by a friendly hotel concierge.Jones, 36, came up with the idea when she caught a delectable whiff of pizza in Times Square. She then narrowly missed stepping in a pile of horse poop. Next, she was engulfed in a cloud of smoke from a
kabob vendor. “We’re in such close quarters, you can’t escape the smell,” says Jones, who works as a concierge at a Times Square hotel. “Everyone talks about the smell, whether pastrami sandwiches or pizza.”The book will feature 20+ odors. "You might step in horse manure and you might trip over a garbage patch,” says Jones, who lives in Flatbush, Brooklyn. “Let’s keep it honest.” For example, Little Italy will smell like pizza. The Upper East Side will carry whiffs of pastrami sandwiches. And Central Park will be a mix of manure and trees. Other scents will include fish, garbage, churros, pickles and bagels.
Most publishers balked at the cost of developing the custom-made smells, so Jones took her cause to Kickstarter, an online fundraising webbie. She is asking for $20,000 in donations, which will allow her to print up to 5,000 copies. So far, she has raised $3,000. She hopes to distribute the book to hotel gift shops, tourist outlets, bookstores and airports.

Can't Wait: James Franco Directs Biopic On Sal Mineo
James Franco first made a name for himself in Hollywood in the 2001 biopic James Dean, for which he won a Golden
Globe. So how fitting that the fine actor is now directing the film Sal, about the life and career of another idol of The Smoking Nun, Sal Mineo.
Dean and Mineo, of course, starred with Natalie Wood in 1955's Rebel Without A Cause, for which Mineo was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as quietly gay character Plato.
He next appeared in Exodus, scoring another Oscar nod and winning a Golden Globe award. Mineo also had a small but meaningful role in Dean's third and final flick Giant; and a roaring good time in the title role of The Gene Krupa Story in 1959, for which he learned to play a mad set of drums. Bizarrely, he also played Milo in Escape From the Planet of the Apes in 1971.Sadly, Mineo—one of the first openly gay actors—was murdered at the age of 37 in 1976.
Sal is based on a new biography of Mineo by Michael Gregg Michaud, and stars relative unknown Val Lauren in the title role. Filming wrapped at the end of June, with a release in 2013. The first stills from Sal have just been released, below the Mineo collage.

What a Newzzzzz-worthy Week: The Top Five Non-Storiezz
What a laboriously boring pop culture week. Lots of "news" that has all the impact of a double-whammy of Ambien... Allow me to share the top five non-stories of the week!
1) Frank Bailey's tell-all book Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin: A Memoir of our Tumultuous Years, is filled with everything we already knew: Palin is in way over her head, she is a power-hungry opportunist, she pulled out her claws when anyone crossed her. Dude, that's all you've got? Yawn!
2) American Idol two-hour finale Wednesday night. America's southern states are still pissed about the Civil War. Who will win, a homely hillbilly that sings country... or the girl? Is there really any question? This is less a contest about singing than the south still getting even for Obama being elected. Snore!
3) Poor Maria Shriver. The silver-spoon Kennedy family wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger has played the put-upon victim after her gruesome husband fathered a child with a family staffer. She couldn't wait to appear on Oprah to talk smack about Ahhhnald, while TMZ now reveals that she's the one who leaked the story in the first place, in an effort to drum up public sympathy and suck him dry... as if she needs the money. Their combined net worth is reported at $500 million. Boo hoo.
4) Rihanna kissed Britney on the Billboard Awards Sunday and it wasn't aired on the telecast. Oh, scandal!! Could it be because we've all been there, done that? Zzzzzz...
5) The only reason I can think of that anyone would watch
ABC's Dancing with the Stars after 12 seasons is to see if Kirstie Alley wipes out because someone greased the dancefloor with burrito meat. Will she gobble up every morsel? This weary "competition" jumped the shark years ago and yet it continues to be popular... much like bingo tournaments at nursing homes. NFL footballer Hines Ward and his pro partner Kym Johnson won. He offered a profound statement to the viewing public: "I want to thank all the fans." Oh, god, I'm getting misty.
Better luck next week!

Coming Tuesday: Tell-All Will Reveal Truth About Sarah Palin's Idiocy
Frank Bailey's scathing tell-all, Blind Allegiance to Sarah Palin: A Memoir of Our Tumultuous Years, hits bookstores Tuesday, and I'm almost giddy about hearing the real story of the dim-witted, power-hungry, take-no-prisoners politico. As a former member of Sarah Palin's inner circle, Bailey based his book on tens of thousands of emails he kept during his years working for Palin, from her 2006 gubernatorial campaign through her failed run for vice president in 2008 and miniscule stint as Alaska governor.Leaks of the manuscript made their way across political blogs in February, revealing that Palin was relentless in tearing down others who crossed or confronted her. Bailey also wrote, "Getting Sarah to meetings and events was like nailing Jell-O to a tree."
I'm certain that's nothing compared to what we're going to hear tomorrow. Oh, golly, by gosh, this is gonna be some good shit.
