Mariah Carey's Creaky Hip-Hop Infused 'Triumphant' Is Anything But

Apparently, Mariah Carey is so a'feared of competing with the young'uns that she has resorted to a new single that is so tried-and-tired, it sounds like it was recorded 10 years ago. Sadly, "Triumphant (Get ‘Em)," produced by Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox, is front-loaded with so much annoying hip-hop that Mimi is a mere afterthought in her own song. Instead, the single is hijacked by rappers Rick Ross and Meek Mills, with Mariah essentially providing background vocals.

Sounds like the new mama hasn't been listening to radio lately, as top 40 has returned to glistening pop melodies. CHR stations are seeing their highest ratings in years. Why? Because a new generation of listeners is weary of same-ole hip-hop rants, and open to the kinds of sing-along melodies that pervaded radio 15 years ago. Call it a reawakening. Call "Triumphant" anything but.

Mariah's new gig as a judge on American Idol will only prop her up so much. While it guarantees weekly exposure through another endless season of the long-in-the-tooth "reality" show, my guess is she's going to be either too nice or way too shallow to rise above Grandaddy Randy Jackson shouting "Dawg!" for the 100,000th time. And while we're at it, girlfriend best start her Atkins diet soon. The airbrushed single cover is far from reality, as we see from the July 30 pics to the left. Whoops!

"Triumphant (Get ‘Em)" is the teaser from what will be Mariah's 13th studio album. She tweeted, "I wrote 'Triumphant' when I was going through a difficult time. When u hear it, pay attention 2 the lyrics." Um... what lyrics? Beyond Ross and Meek, there's precious little here... It's like "We Belong Together," sans any semblance of the artist, aside from a sing-song chorus.

At a time when Mariah could have shown the little girls who's boss with a pop track showcasing her vocal abilities, a la "Emotion," this is not only a major disappointment, it's utterly less than zero. Hear for yourself here or below. *

'Grace Kelly' Singer Mika Finally Comes Out

My theory has always been that any man who claims he is bisexual is simply too ashamed to come out as gay. Women, perhaps, since they are driven by both physical and emotional ties. But let's face it, men are guided by sexuality. Gay or straight.

Back in 2009, British singer Mika confessed to a Dutch magazine that he was bisexual. Bullshit... Now, at last, three years later—surprise!!—the 28-year-old has come to terms with the fact that he's gay. In an interview with Instinct, the "Grace Kelly" singer said: "If you ask me am I gay, yeah. Are these songs about my relationship with a man? Yeah. It’s only through my music that I’ve found the strength to come to terms with my sexuality beyond the context of just my lyrics. This is my real life."

Mika’s new single is "Celebrate" from his upcoming third album The Origin of Love. Perhaps if he'd come to terms when he was in the limelight, Mika wouldn't forever remain a U.S. one-hit wonder. Hiding never helps.*

James Franco Covers 'Flaunt' Magazine

The talented & ever handsome James Franco covers the September 2012 issue of Flaunt. This same mag had the good taste to feature Joe Manganiello earlier in the year. *

Los Angeles: So Long All Too Soon...

Sigh... And that's a wrap for a wondrous, mind-clearing Cali excursion with former work wife and forever friend K'tina. We packed a shitload of activity into five days, I tell you what, including numerous walks around her beautiful Studio City neighborhood. Great meals, too, at The Six, Jerry's Deli and Laurel Tavern. *

Los Angeles: The Finale...

And finally, a collection of drive-by & walk-by random images from my Westward Ho excursion. *Above, Beverly Hills, ooh la la! Look, it's a MALL! Also Kristina's favorite destination in L.A., the Beverly Center. How about that view from the terrace on the top floor? An old movie theater craftily turned into Barnes & Noble in Studio City. Well done. *

Los Angeles: Kings Road Cafe Sunday Brunch

Awesome brunch with Kristina, Fredly and Minerva on Sunday at the Kings Road Cafe in Los Angeles. Perfect people watching spot. K'tina and I kinda sorta laughed at the perspective of the pic above. We look like sweet midgets compared to the giants on our side, har har. *

Los Angeles: Hollyweird!

How perfect is it that the main digs for Scientology are located right in the heart of Hollywood, home of the crazies, land of the loonies? Their "compound" is a sight to see, with a massive powder blue building that looks like a combination hospital/prison. Along the sides are bunches of cottages—all locked tight with multiple iron gates. You can visit... but can you ever leave?

K'tina and I also took in a drive-by of the area surrounding Sunset and Vine, packed with tourists. And the scariest of all: The Hollywood Center Motel, a dive right along Sunset. Kristina commented that this is where folks must come to DIE. Creepy shit. *

Los Angeles: Driving Through Laurel Canyon & The Hollywood Hills

Driving is a novelty for me anymore, since New York City is a public transpo kind of town. Kristina allowed me to escort her around Los Angeles in her trusty Toyota as we scoured most every conceivable neighborhood. We walked miles each day as well, but for major triptychs, it was wheels all the way.

She lives in Studio City, which requires navigating the winding mountainous roads of Laurel Canyon, while we also motored into the oh-so-steep roads of the Hollywood Hills. Man, was it a blast to drive up and down, and around and around, mustering speeds as fast as possible...

On Sunday, we dared to take on the infamous Mulholland Drive, off of Laurel Canyon. I can honestly say it scared the living bejesus out of me. We drove about a mile before our mutual ill of ease with heights had us waving the white flag and gently—so gently—returning to the main roads. Horrifying (and no pics of Mulholland, believe me). *

Los Angeles: Lunch With Fredly

Among my first events in Los Angeles was a delectable lunch with pal Fredly at The Daily Grill in Studio City on Ventura. Fred eats out every damn day and there wasn't a single staffer that didn't know him by name. Three words: chicken pot pie. Thank you, god (and Fred). *
