The Week In Music: “Idol” Tanks On TV, But Charges The Charts

On the tube, at least, “American Idol” appears to have slunk into wearisome “yesterday’s news” territory for much of America. The Season 11 finale this week posted its lowest ratings ever—down 29% from last year—as blues troubadour Phillip Phillips was crowned the winner, possessing about as much personal panache as 2011’s victor, dreary country crooner Scotty McCreery. Yawn!

However, where there’s real talent, consumers are still prepared to rally. On this week’s album chart, for the first time, one “American Idol” supplants another at No. 1—a notable feat for the franchise.

Adam Lambert powers to the top of the Billboard 200 with his new “Trespassing,” moving 77,000 copies. That pushes out last week’s chart-topper, Season 4 “AI” winner Carrie Underwood, whose “Blown Away” dips to No. 3. The latter holds at No. 1 on Country Albums for a third week.

This is “Idol” Season 8 runner-up Lambert’s first No. 1 album, following “For Your Entertainment,” which debuted and peaked at No. 3 during the 2009 holiday season—blocked by Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” and Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas.” “Entertainment” delivered the 2010 top 10 hit “Whataya Want From Me,” which was nominated for a Best Male Pop Vocal Performance Grammy. So far, the only action “Trespassing” has fostered is a murmur on Hot Digital Songs with the title track, which enters at a tepid No. 178.

Billboard columnist Gary Trust notes that Lambert is the seventh “AI” finalist to reach No. 1, alongside Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Underwood, Chris Daughtry and McCreery. And next week we’ll see how Kris Allen fares; he defeated Lambert on “Idol” in 2009, and sophomore album, “Thank You Camellia” will chart a week from now. Like McCreery before him, Allen has hardly become a household name: Following two medium-sized hits in 2009, he’s delivered three consecutive flops, including 2012’s (current) “The Vision of Love” from the new album. It’s safe to say that Lambert is runner-up in title only.

Moving along… At No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in its 65th chart week is “21” from Adele, who has grown as comfortable in the runner-up spot as she has at No. 1. By far, she is in the lead of 2012’s best-selling albums to date (followed by Lionel Richie’s “Tuskegee” and Whitney Houston’s Whitney: The Greatest Hits.”)

Comedy rock duo Tenacious D—actors Jack Black and Kyle Glass—launches at No. 4 on the album chart with “Rize of the Fenix.” They reached No. 8 in 2006 with “The Pick of Destiny.” Norah Jones’ “Little Broken Hearts” holds at 5; “Now 42” is down 2 to 6; and debuting at No. 7 is indie duo Beach Houses with “Bloom,” its first top 40 entry among three charted albums. Also new is No. 8, “Glee, the Music: Season Three, The Graduation Album,” the 14th top album for the Fox TV series. At No. 9, down 6, is Lionel Richie’s “Tuskegee”; while One Direction’s “Up All Night” dips 3 to No. 10.

On the singles side, Gotye’s delectable “Somebody That I Used to Know,” featuring Kimbra, spends a luxurious sixth week at No. 1 on the Hot 100. (Remember I taught you how to say his name a couple weeks ago: “Got-ee-aye.” Good for you…) The alt-meets-dance-meets-pop song tops Radio Songs, at last, up 2-1, while it’s No. 1 on Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs, Alternative Songs (its 12th week) and Dance/Mix Show Airplay (3 weeks). It now ties Fun.’s “We Are Young” for most weeks at No. 1 in 2012.

Canadian songbird Carly Jepsen’s perky “Call Me Maybe,” No. 2 on the Hot 100, continues to knock on heaven’s door as a potential singles chart-topper. It rises to No. 1 on Digital Songs in its 13th week, also claiming top Digital and Airplay Gainer honors. It rises 9-7 on Pop Songs airplay and 12-9 on Radio Songs, according to NielsenBDS. “Maybe” holds at No. 3 on On-Demand Songs.

Maroon 5’s “Payphone,” featuring Wiz Khalifa, surprisingly slips 2-3 on the Hot 100, although it moves up 4 to No. 10 on Radio Songs. Fun.’s anthemic “We Are Young,” featuring Janelle Monae—which spent six weeks at No. 1 in March and April—eases 3 to 4; as Nicki Minaj’s sing-songy “Starships” returns to No. 5, up 1.

Flo Rida’s “Wild Ones,” featuring Sia, dips 5-6, while 7-10 remain locked in place: One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful,” the Wanted’s “Glad You Came,” Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” and Train’s “Drive By.”

Coming Up: John Mayer and his new hippie haircut will likely make a robust debut next week with “Born And Raised.”

Finally, the week wouldn’t be complete without a look at the love expressed for Donna Summer in the wake of her untimely death last week, at age 63. Paul Grein from Yahoo! Music was kind enough to do the legwork, and reports that nine Summer songs enter the Hot Digital Songs chart. The Oscar-winning “Last Dance,” arguably her signature hit, leads the way, with sales of 38,000.

Following are “On The Radio,” “Hot Stuff,” “She Works Hard For The Money,” “Bad Girls,” “Love To Love You Baby,” “MacArthur Park,” “Dim All The Lights” and “Heaven Knows.” In addition, four Donna Summer compilations re-enter The Billboard 200, led by “On The Radio—Greatest Hits—Volumes I & II.”

It about slayed me that we lost five-time Grammy winner Summer and Bee Gee Robin Gibb within days of one another. I was a teenager in the midst of disco’s joyous revolution in the late 1970s. Too young, perhaps, for entry into Studio 54, but believe me, my friends and I spent many a weekend mastering the Pretzel and spinning in unison to so many indelible dance ditties. R.I.P Donna & Robin.*

Critter Comforts

Crash! Boom! Abby & Spencer are terrified of thunder, like many critters of their ilk. They took refuge on the sofa in the office where I work, tucked around an afghan. Ah, safety!

Will Wows On Monday's 'DWTS'... And Now... Who Will Win?

William Levy's first dance Monday, the Cha Cha Cha, garnered a perfect 30/30 score from the DWTS judges. On the follow-up Freestyle, he and partner Cheryl Burke scored 29/30. Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins scored a pair of 30s; while Super Bowl "star"/Green Bay Packers player Donald Driver tied Will with 59.

Man, oh, man, this is going to be close! Tonight's the night. Will William Levy win? Or will Katherine Jenkins burst into uncontrollable tears, as she realizes this is the high point of her entire career. Countdown... four hours!

In an interview with The Miami Herald today, Levy was deemed "a man in demand." He said that the biggest challenge for him has been "learning all the rules that come with ballroom dancing. When I dance, I don’t like rules." Regarding judge Bruno's racy homo-friendly comments, he adds, "He speaks his mind, and I respect that." And after the show ends, he reveals: "I have projects in the works, but we aren’t able to talk about them at this time. But we will soon." *

19-Year-Old Miley Cyrus Dresses As 40-Year-Old Hag

Wow! Look at Miley Cyrus at Sunday's Billboard Music Awards! Dressed in lovely, virginal white, she decided that the apropos look for the night was to look as much like a coked-up Patty Duke in Valley of the Dolls as possible, while accidentally wearing one of Lady Gaga's wigs backward.

She certainly looks at least twice her age here, and mercy, it's going to take a spatula to carve off all that dreadful Baltimore-inspired eye make-up.

Girl, there will come a time when you wonder why you didn't embrace youth... all too soon. Just drunk dial Lindsay Lohan for further details: 1-800-REHAB. *

'Dancing With The Stars': THE FINALE IS TONIGHT!

TONIGHT: Monday, May 21 at 8 p.m., Dancing With the Stars' long and winding 14th season comes to a climax. Dear William Levy, whose talent and charisma have propelled him into a national U.S. celebrity during his run, is among the three finalists, with pro dancing partner Cheryl Burke. They will go against stiffie athlete Donald Driver and Barbie Doll cry-baby Welsh vocalist Katherine Jenkins for the tiara, uh, I mean mirror ball trophy.

This is it, cool cats! The three couples will be dancing a freestyle routine during the one-hour competition Monday (Will & Cheryl are practicing a Cha-Cha-Cha), and apparently one couple will be booted, with the remaining two finalists then competing with a pair of additional dances.

Tuesday night, when the winner is at laaaaaast revealed, Kelly Clarkson and Gladys Knight will be performing during the telecast, while all of the season's eliminated couples will return to perform some of their "most memorable routines," while flashing bitter faux grins that they were eliminated earlier in the season.

Don't forget to vote for Will!  You can register at abc.com for online voting, which starts Monday at 8 p.m., and closes Tuesday at 11 a.m.  with AT&T can text the Word VOTE to 3408 to cast their votes for Levy. The last two methods for voting can only be done within 60 minutes after the show is over.

My gut feeling for the season: Driver will be the first to be eliminated, while Jenkins will ultimately win the DWTS competition, amid a gushing flow of crocodile tears and a declaration of "Oh, I just can't believe it. Waaaaaah!" However, I think it's clear that William Levy's path to stardom has been paved, while Jenkins will slide back into obscurity... where she came from. Ole! *

Joey Lawrence Joins Chippendales In Vegas!

Good googa-mooga. The Smoking Nun's Sexiest Men Alive for 2008, Joey Lawrence, is reportedly joining the Las Vegas cast of Chippendales. The 36-year-old will work as a singer, dancer and host. He told AP that after watching Channing Tatum at a screening of upcoming stripper flick Magic Mike, he couldn't wait to whip it all out...

Oh, no wait, that's not quite right... He said that watching the film "encouraged him to join the male revue. I found out that guys like Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem have also done stuff like this and being the fearless guy that I am, I said yes."

Hmm, actually my interpretation doesn't seem that far off, after all, does it?

The married father of two currently stars as a male nanny in the dreadful ABC Family series Melissa & Joey, where he inexplicably keeps his shirt on. Lawrence follows delicious 98 Degrees' singer Jeff Timmons with his star-turn with the Chips. *

R.I.P. Robin GIbb

As we knew a month ago, Bee Gee Robin Gibb was in critical condition, battling colon and liver cancer and recently hospitalized with pneumonia. He came out of a coma and managed to hang on for another four weeks, but Sunday, died at age 63.

Robin's twin brother Maurice died of complications resulting from a twisted intestine in 2003.

Man, oh, man, Donna Summer and Robin Gibb in the same week. God bless disco. *

New Trailer For 'Magic Mike': Now We're Talking!

One month ago, we wrote on The Smoking Nun that the then just-released theatrical trailer for stripper flick Magic Mike was an utter disaster: "With a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Mangianello, Matt Bomer and Matthew McConau- ghey, you would think that the introduction to the majorly hyped $20 million Magic Mike would include a scene or two that comprises what this film's appeal is: Hot guys bumping and grinding."

Instead, the lame April tease focused on a zzzzzz romance between Channing Tatum as his masculine-looking love interest Cody Horn. We added, "I tell you, Warners is marketing this to be a gigantic flop, if the studio believes a dramatic love story is why people will dole out dollars to see Magic Mike.

Well, apparently the studio suits were reading The Nun, after all. Take a look at the new trailer—now we're talking! MM is released June 29. *

William Levy In 'DWTS' Final Three (As I Blissfully Work My Tale Off)

Oh, cool cats, there's so much I want to share with you... Do you realize I haven't even covered William Levy's triumphant, wickedly sensual victory on Dancing With The Stars this week, which has propelled him into the final three?

And how about our Sexiest Man Alive being nominated for the Teen Choice Awards as "Choice TV Male Reality Star"? The show airs July 22.

Truth be told, I have been wonderfully busy writing for my freelance career... My weekly duties as a reporter for Radio-Info.com covering radio industry news, blanketing the Brooklyn Heights blog with coverage of my neighborhood—and most urgently, working on a mad deadline for my temp gig as Editor of the guidebook for June's NYC New Music Seminar.

The NMS editorial deadline was Friday, meaning that for the majority of this week my schedule has looked like this: 8a-1p: Radio-Info; 2-4p: BHB; and NMS until beddy bye, often until midnight all week. Being so busy is a blessing, for sure, but there's so much coverage I have piled up for the Nun... Stand by, beautiful minions. We'll get there. But your boy's got to eat. *

Week In Music: Forbes Celebrity 100's Entrepreneurs… They Sing, Too

Teen Beat, meet Forbes. This month the two publications share a cover boy in Justin Bieber, whose venture capital investments cozy up to his 12 million albums sold, for a No. 3 rank on the annual Forbes Celebrity 100 list. Stranger bedfellows may never meet again.

Topping the 2012 Celebrity 100 list, released Wednesday, is Jennifer Lopez, whose $52 million in earnings over the past year add credence to the fact that she is far more than a singer and actress: JLo is a brand.

Alongside judging duties on “American Idol,” People magazine’s 2012 Most Beautiful Woman endorses her 18-scent Coty fragrance line, L’Oreal Paris, Venus and even hawks her children as the face of Gucci’s Children’s Collection.

Meanwhile, Lopez’s music career continues to flourish: “Dance Again” featuring Pitbull, is No. 17 on the Hot 100 this week, and No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs. It’s also top 20 on Pop Songs, Latin Songs and Digital Songs.

Following non-musician Oprah Winfrey at No. 2 on the Forbes list is No. 3 singer Biebs, whose empire includes 21 million Twitter followers, second only to Lady Gaga, the magazine reports.

His first single, 2009’s top 5 “Baby,” is the most-watched video in YouTube history, with 750 million views; while he has fostered 43 million Facebook fans. On the bling side, Forbes estimates that at least $3 million of Bieber’s 2011-2012 earnings of $55 million (from touring, his biopic film “Never Say Never” and fragrance Someday) are invested in startups Enflick, messaging playform Tinychat, social curation app Stamped, gaming outfit Sojo Studios, video sharing app Viddy, and online music platform Spotify.

Oh, and then there’s the music. Bieber’s current single “Boyfriend” peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100 last month, while scoring formidable airplay at Hip-Hop R&B stations—hardly the norm for teen acts—along with top 10 peaks on the Pop Songs and On-Demand Songs charts and No. 1 ranks on YouTube and Digital Songs. His third album “Believe” hits June 19, three years after the 18 year old scored his first hit. And he’s hotter than ever. Celebrity, indeed.

Four more musicians round out the Forbes’ top 10—who, with Bieber, are notably all age 30 or below, and all female solo songbirds: Rihanna at No. 4 (with recent endorsements Vita Coco, Nivea and fragrance Reb’l Fleur); last year’s No. 1-ranked Lady Gaga at No. 5 (believe it or not, her primary fortune comes from music sales, touring and social media—and one endorsement, for MAC cosmetics); Britney Spears at No. 6 (touring, Candie’s and an Elizabeth Arden fragrance line); and Katy Perry at No. 8 (with five No. 1 singles from CD “Teenage Dream,” touring, a ProActive endorsement and fragrance Purr).

From 11-20, three more radio acts score amid Forbes’ Celebrity 100. At No. 11 is country crossover singer/songwriter Taylor Swift, 22, who reaped $65 million from touring, alongside record sales, LEI Jeans and an ongoing CoverGirl contract.

Beyonce, No. 16, has never met an endorsement she didn’t embrace. As the No. 1 music act on CelebrityEndorsementAds.com—like Lopez—her name is worth more than her music, with such tie-ins as a House of Dereon clothing line, L'Oreal, DirecTV, two fragrance lines, Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, Nintendo, Vizio, Emporio Armani Diamonds and Nintendo DS.

How about Elton John at No. 17 to round out musicians among the top 20? The 65-year-old pop-rocker’s Las Vegas residency sold out 100+ shows in the past year, along with his animated film “Gnomeo and Juliet,” which reaped $200 million at the box office. He also has a 34th album in the wings.

Outside the top 20, grizzled newlywed rocker Paul McCartney, who continues to actively tour, rolls in at No. 21; while Adele—who, at 24, is nearly a third the age of 69-year-old McCartney—is No. 24; and rocker Bon Jovi is No. 25.

From there, it’s interesting to note that musicians making the top 100 list are either pervasive in hip-hop or country: Dr. Dre at 26, Jay-Z 38, Diddy 42, Kanye West 45, Toby Keith 49, Kenny Chesney 53, Brad Paisley 68, and Lil Wayne 69.

Finally, rounding out the Celebrity 100 with a spin, is Dutch electronica DJ Tiesto 84, whom Forbes notes grosses $250,000 per night, with 100+ shows in the past year. He also has more than 1 million Twitter followers and 12 million Facebook fans.

The Forbes list is compiled by looking at pre-tax income from May 1, 2011 to 2012, alongside “fame”—meaning how often the celebrities appear on TV, movies and online, and their social media following. *
