Movin' On Up To Heaven: Sherman Hemsley Dies at 74

Sherman Hemsley, the curmudgeonly star of 1970s' fave The Jeffersons, has died at age 74. He played George Jefferson in the long-running sitcom, which ran for 11 seasons, 1975-1985. The show, of course, was a spin-off from Norman Lear's All in the Family, which focused on George and his wife Weezie (Louise), played by Isabel Sanford. His performance was Emmy and Golden Globe nominated.

After The Jeffersons, Hemsley starred in the sitcom Amen as fiery Philadelphia church deacon Ernest Frye. The show latest five years, running 1986 to 1991.

He was found dead in his home in El Paso, Texas. Helmsley was a life-long bachelor, although he never came out of the closet publicly. *

Carly Rae Jepsen & Owl City: 'Good Time'

Sweet! Here's the official music video for Carley Rae Jepsen's new single with Owl City... Let's hope this has impact. The song appears to have peaked prematurely on the Billboard Hot 100 at a paltry No. 17, falling this week to No. 21. *

The Taylor Top 25 2012 Mid-Year Countdown

TAYLOR TOP 25, January-June 2012

Mid-year 2012 is one joyous pop affair for the Taylor Top 25, with fewer maudlin ballads than marked (a rather dismal personal) 2011... At the top is out & proud Aussie cutie Anthony Callea with non-single release "I Don't Care What You Say" from EP Last To Go. Callea also places ballad "Tangled" at No. 8, easily ranking as the Top Male Act of Mid-Year 2012.

In the runner-up slot is Carly Rae Jepsen's ubiquitous "Call Me Maybe," not only one of the greatest pop anthems in years, but a testament that when Top 40 radio indulges great female pop songs, everybody wins.

Our Top Female Vocalist of the mid-year delivers everything that we love about women singers: robust, beautiful, crisp vocals sans gimmicks... Katharine McPhee has had a minor sprinkling of success on the TTT, but was never really a "wow" artist... until she was cast in NBC's 2012 series Smash.

She places four songs in the top 25, led by her American Idol shoulda-been victory song from season five, "My Destiny" at No. 3 (she lost to big-ass loser Taylor Hicks, now flipping burgers at Wendy's in North Dakota). We're obviously playing catch-up here with this beautiful power ballad.

From there, the Smash soundtrack delivers ballad "Let Me Be Your Star" with co-star Megan Hilty at No. 5, her cover of Christina Aguleira's "Beautiful" at No. 16, and Ryan Tedder-penned pop/rock/dance dazzler "Touch Me" at No. 25.

We've still got a few oh-so-sad songs that I continue to relate to: "Over You" by Miranda Lambert at No. 22 is the ideal, which speaks the hard truth: "You went away, how dare you, I miss you. They say I'll be okay, but I'm not going to ever get over you..." And Christina Perri, who delivered maudlin "The Lonely" and "Jar of Hearts" to 2011's top 20, returns with the more optimistic "A Thousand Years" at No. 6, and testy "Arms" at No. 12.

Many of the biggest mainstream hits at U.S. radio this year have been unusually inspired, considering that the airwaves remain 100% controlled by corporate mandate. Gotye, Fun., Jepsen, One Direction and Maroon 5 were all indulged by the powers that be... and are wondrous, memorable hits. I think it goes without saying that no matter how many hits Nicki Minaj has, in 10 years, she'll be regarded as the MC Hammer of our day. But these other songs will forever remind us where we were, what we were doing, marking time, when we fell in love with them. That is the magic of music.  *

Counting Down The 2012 Mid-Year Hits, Volume II

Let the countdowns begin! Bobby's, Timmy's and meese's "Coast To Coast"! *

Counting Down The 2012 Mid-Year Hits, Volume I

Traditions... Oh, those few things we hold onto and treasure. For the past 150+ years, Bobby, Timmy and I have been counting down our top songs of the year... in Brooklyn, in Manhattan, in Jersey City and Fire Island... and along the way there have been many invited guests.

On Saturday, we returned to roots as a trio to count down our Top 25 mid-year 2012 smasheroos here in Brooklyn Heights.

Thank god we met at 3 p.m., since it took nine-plus hours, all said and done, with plenty of vodka and gin to keep the gullet moist. First up... A walk along the Heights Promenade with Abby & Spencer and a visit to the rooftop of my building. *This photo above merited a new Facebook profile pic...

Mariah Carey Confirmed As New 'American Idol' Judge

Thank god. Fox TV confirmed Monday that Mariah Carey has signed on as a judge for the 194th season of American Idol. According to sources, Mimi is set to make somewhere between $12 and $17 million to judge the next endless season.

I couldn't be more relieved. Producers surely won't put another diva on the team in the chair beside Mariah... meaning Celine Dion, whom I was terrified would tarnish her career by even considering going down on this sinking ship.

The best part: Mariah has never been the sharpest knife in the drawer. She might just give Paula Abdul a run for some of the most confounding statements ever. Things might just get interesting, after all. (Just kidding! Who cares?!)

As Athletics Overshadow The Law, Penn State Gets What It Deserves

So many lessons... Penn State's shameful child-sexual-abuse scandal involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky exposes how athletics at the university level are accustomed to living above the law.

Athletes slide through four years without passing the same academic muster as other students; they are awarded gargantuan scholarships for being able to throw a ball instead of use their brains; and, worst of all, college officials typically turn the other way when it comes to behavior that would be deemed unacceptable in any other forum (except, perhaps, the scandal-ridden Catholic church).

Looking at the faces of the Penn State University students who are aghast that the college was forced to pay for its sins pretty much says it all. Media reports say some actually wept out of disappointment! (These are the same students who held a demonstration when shamed Coach Joe Paterno was fired.)

On Monday, the NCAA took an unprecedented step in punishing the school for letting Sandusky slide for decades, just so its athletics program might continue to excel. The school was fined $60 million, banned from bowl games for four years and had a share of athletic scholarships stripped away. And perhaps best of all, every one of Penn State's wins from 1998 to 2011 has been stricken from the record. "The Penn State case has provoked in all of us a deeply emotional response and shaken our confidence in many ways," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. The sanctions were intended to help Penn State "rebuild a culture that went terribly awry."

Emmert added that a "grave danger" of university sports programs is that they "can become too big to fail, indeed too big to even challenge."

The $60 million will be used to create an endowment to help prevent child sexual abuse. It equates one year's revenue for the football team, Emmert said. Being deemed ineligible for Big Ten championship games for four years will cost the university its $13 million share of bowl game revenues.

The moves follow a report this month from former FBI Director Louis that proved longtime Head Football Coach Joe Paterno and other university officials didn't act on allegations of sexual abuse involving Sandusky. He was convicted in June on 45 counts related to abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period, starting in 1994.

On Sunday, Penn State also removed a seven-foot statue of the late Paterno outside the school's Beaver Stadium. The 900-pound bronze artwork was an "obstacle to healing," the university said. *

There Is No Good To Come From Owning A Gun

Despite hailing from the South, I've never understood the reasoning behind any individual wanting or needing to own a gun. What good is ever going to come from it? I was taken aback to find this advert in the August/September 2012 issue of Garden & Gun magazine... which is kind-of sort-of like a modern-generation Southern Living.

The pub's title is meant to be ironic and it's a fine periodical about food & travel and such... but seeing this ad on page 9 in the current issue is jarring, if not wholly disturbing: "Childhood Dreams Can Come True." The idea that passing your giant killer rifle down from generation to generation... and teaching your kids to be proud of ownership is more like a nightmare, if you ask me.

This may be the only time that I actually agree with NYC Mayor Bloomberg, who has always been an opponent of semi-automatic weapons, and is renewing his call for a nationwide ban. *

We Love Sports! Scottish Rugby Star Thom Evans Covers 'Attitude'

As we gear up for the Summer Olympic games in London, beginning , July 25, we continue to show just how much we've come to love sports. Here's 27-year-old Scottish rugby player Thom Evans, who retired from professional sports following a neck injury.

He continues, however, to be popular overseas, and dons the August 2012 cover of Brit mag Attitude. The curious cover title reads: “Thom Evan is not in the Olympics, but he is in his pants. The total package.”

Evans has been dating English model, actress, entrepreneur, television presenter and Playboy model Kelly Brook since December 2010.  (Cover pic courtesy of Homorazzi) Evans was among the models at the April 2011 Dressed To Kilt in NYC, which I covered for Country Weekly. Of course, at the time, I had no earthly idea who the hell he was... other than a hot guy. *

Caesars Palace Hypes Shania Twain Show—By Relying On Celine's Rep

Caesars Palace has released a commercial promoting Shania Twain's upcoming Las Vegas residency, along with the posh new Nobu Hotel tower (that Celine Dion's ongoing residency no doubt bankrolled). Shania's "Still the One" show is set to launch at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace December 1. She'll rotate with Celine, Elton John and Rod Stewart.

Obviously, the hotel recognizes that its reputation as a world-class live concert mecca has everything to do with Celine's persistent sell-out concert presence... and thus she appears in the spot. Man, oh man, Celine looks beautiful.

Meanwhile, here's a news flash: Apparently, Ne-Yo is collaborating with Celine Dion on her upcoming English album Water and a Flame. He shared on his Instagram page a pic of the pair hugging during a late-night studio session, writing, "The incomparable Celine Dion!! In the studio doing something epic. God is good. Music is good, all the time."

This isn't the first time that Ne-Yo and Celine have worked together: He wrote the wonderfully intense "I Got Nothing Left" for her previous album Taking Chances. *

Week In Music: The Summer Of Love... For Girl Power

Blazing temperatures aren’t the only thing heating up the summer of 2012. Consider this the season of Girl Power at CHR radio. As Carly Rae Jepsen’s ubiquitous uptempo anthem “Call Me Maybe” logs a sixth week atop the Singles Chart, four other solo female singers join her in the top 10. You’d have to go back to the beginning of the millennium—a la Britney, Christina and Jessica—to see as many pop princesses rallying in the higher reaches of the Billboard Hot 100.

Let’s call this the Summer of Love… for females. In addition to Jepsen’s debut release feat, singer/songwriter Adele sets yet another record with “21.” Her sophomore album spends a 73rd week inside the Billboard 200’s top 10, the longest run by any woman in history—trumping Alanis Morissette's 1995 “Jagged Little Pill.” And then there’s the fervent return of pop staple Pink.

As Jepsen's “Call Me Maybe” continues its command of the Hot 100 in its 21st week on the chart, the track earns its keep as the longest-running No. 1 for a female solo artist since Adele’s “Rolling In the Deep” logged seven weeks from May to July 2011. It also leads On-Demand Songs for a fifth week, and is No. 2 on Radio Songs, Pop Songs and Digital Songs (after leading the latter list for eight weeks). In addition, it tops the Summer Songs 2012 tally for a third week, which Radio-Info.com’s Sean Ross has been keeping tabs on.

Also among the week’s top 10 singles, Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" rises 4-3, newcomer Brit Ellie Goulding’s pop-fueled “Lights” holds at 5, Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" is locked at No. 6—and entering the top 10 at No. 9 is the massive return of Pink.

And that’s where we focus for the rest of this week’s female-centric Week In Music. Pink—pardon me, she has returned to being known as P!nk—rockets into the top 10 on the Hot 100 with new single "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)," which catapults 58-9 in its second week on the chart. The break-up anthem flies 41-4 on Digital Songs, while CHR radio is actually ahead of the game this time: It rallies 56-23 on Radio Songs, with 39 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS.

“Blow Me” is the 32 year old’s 12th Hot 100 top 10, which began in 2000 with “There You Go.” Within the millennium, she has more top 10s than any other female act, other than Rihanna (22) and Beyonce (14). With the new single, she trumps both Lady Gaga and Katy Perry.

This is the first release from Pink's sixth studio album, “The Truth About Love,” due September 18. It’s been four years since her last studio album, 2008's "Funhouse,” which produced hits "So What," "Sober" and "Please Don't Leave Me." Her 2010 "Greatest Hits... So Far!!!," included No. 1 "Raise Your Glass" and No. 2 "Fuckin' Perfect.”

Already, “Blow Me” has reached No. 1 in Australia (her sixth)—where it debuted in the top spot—while it’s also top 10 in Canada and New Zealand. A worldwide tour will follow the album’s release this fall.

With women in charge, how fitting that the Spice Girls reunited last week for the first time since 2008 to announce the launch of “Viva Forever,” a jukebox theatrical musical packed with their 1990s’ hits. It opens this December in London. Girl power, indeed. *
