Celine Dion Offers 'Open Arms' For MDA Telethon: $61.5M Raised

Celine Dion was among the artists that performed on the MDA Telethon Sunday night, raising a total of $61.5 million, its best take since the second Great Depression gripped the nation in 2008. The six-hour program featured an exclusive taped performance of "Open Arms" from Celine's Las Vegas show, along with an acknowledgment to the long-time contributions of former host Jerry Lewis.

"It's always a privilege to be part of the MDA Labor Day telethon," she said. "I hope by taking part in this great cause I can help make MDA and its mission to make life better for families who are fighting muscle diseases.

"From supporting the work of scientists who are searching for treatments and cures, to helping children go to summer camp, MDA provides love and care in so many ways. Thanks to your generous contributions, MDA can continue to do so many wonderful things for those in need."

Celine added, "I want to say a few special thanks to my dear friend Jerry Lewis. Jerry, you will always be a hero to the MDA families and to people everywhere. You are a shining example the power we all have to make the world a better place." She dedicated "Open Arms" to the 85-year-old.

The first MDA Telethon was held in 1959, becoming an annual Labor Day weekend tradition by the late 1960s. Also taking part in this year's telecast were Jordin Sparks, Martina McBride, Lady Antebellum, Billy Ray Cyrus, Richie Sambora, Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez.
Meanwhile, Celine appears in the September 2011 issue of Télé Review, promoting her latest fragrance. CelineDion.com claims this is a spanking new image of Dion.

FIre Island: Labor Day Weekend/Sunny Holiday Monday

Man, oh man, what a beautiful Labor Day weekend at Fire Island. I could not have asked for a more perfect holiday to—sigh—cap the summer of 2011.
Gene & Steve have been together since 1969—42 years! They decided over the past month that with marriage equality now a legal reality in the state of New York, they will marry next Aug. 18, in Fire Island. We made a stop by the home of their friend Willie to case the joint and begin figuring out logistics. How could I not have teared up?

Views of downtown Fire Island Grove...

Mercy, almighty... Grade-A gay beefcake... What a blessed world we live in.
Cute boys brunching...More mature boys brunching...
Ironically, cutie Evan, whom I photographed on the ferry ride to Fire Island—and saw Friday and Saturday nights—was on the same train back to the city.
Farewell, Fire Island, for now... Sweet sigh...

Madness & mayhem at a drag show at the Grove's Ice Palace Hotel.

Fire Island: Labor Day Weekend/Sunday Tea... Boy Boys Boys

Perhaps this view looks familiar... Another packed house for the Pines Tea Dance...

Fire Island: Labor Day Weekend/Sunday Up On The Roof

Sunday early evening, with Ayhan now on premises, Gene & Steve took us to the home of Gloria & Stephen, who own the largest house in Fire Island's Grove. We went to the rooftop where the views were absolutely killer.
Here's Gene & Steve's cottage from high in the sky.
Much of the foliage has turned brown, we're told, because of the salt water that sprayed across the island during Hurricane Irene. It looks like fall, eh?
This shows just how narrow Fire Island is: on the left is the bay and on the right the Atlantic Ocean.
Above, the hodge-podge house... And below, a real beauty oceanside...
