Irish Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connor, whose cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U" was my No. 1 track of 1990, turned 44 Wednesday. She won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance for the song, and was also nominated for her stellar "The Lion and the Cobra" album, which included college hit "Mandinka," a staple of my WHFS-FM days in D.C.
Timmy and I met Sinéad at an industry function in the late 1990s. She was an odd bird, seemingly ill at ease with every man in the room. Despite her pleasant expression in this pic, I sense she was mortified that I made physical contact.
