Ice cream retailer Haagen Daaz is celebrating its 50th anniversary today—with a free scoop of chocolate, vanilla or coffee ice cream nationwide. Coolness. The chain's first retail store was opened here in Brooklyn Heights in 1976 (HD is now in 54 countries), fostering mayhem on Montague Street, as TV crews descended, speeches were made, a van paraded in front of the store and a huge cake was presented. All good, but I'm ready for my chocolate scoop now, please.
