On May 13, 1981, Turkish sniper Mehmet Ali Ağca shot Pope John Paul II as he rode in an open car in Vatican City. He was hit in the abdomen, left hand and right arm and suffered major blood loss, which required five hours of surgery. Despite being sentenced to life in prison, after the Pope requested Ağca's pardon, he was released in 2010 after spending 29 years behind bars, then declaring himself "a messenger of God."
