Susan Lucci is now like many of the rest of us: unemployed.
ABC has pulled the plug on soaps All My Children, on-air since 1970, and One Life To Live, launched in 1968.
After some 40 years, Children, which has garnered 30+ Emmy Awards, will bid farewell in September. Life, which has received 40+ Emmys, will be axed in January 2012. Both will be replaced by shows about food, weight loss and personal finance, ABC says, which are cheap as dirt to produce.
In 2009, CBS cut the 72-year run of The Guiding Light, and in 2010, As the World Turns. In 1969, 19 soap operas were on-air; in 1990, 12. And now there are four: General Hospital on ABC, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful on CBS and Days of Our Lives on NBC.
