On Sept. 21, 1938, the "Long Island Express," a fast-moving Category 3 storm, tore across central Long Island and New York City, and ripped into southern New England, killing at least 600 people, pushing a wall of water 35 feet high in front of it and sweeping away buildings and protective barrier islands.
