I've enjoyed many hours at the Brooklyn Public libraries, researching Brooklyn Heights and surrounding neighborhoods. It was announced this week that all branches in the third-largest library system in the state will now be closed Sundays.
According to the Brooklyn Paper, cutbacks were ordered because union employees get time-and-a-half on Sundays." Uh, why? Unions must recognize that times have changed. Anyone is fortunate to have a job. I'd be delighted if part-time non-union staffers could be hired for weekends, forcing union workers to decide if they want to work—or not—for standard pay. For all New Yorkers to suffer such a sacrifice is shameful. This is 2009. It's TIME to REDEFINE.
