Brooklyn's New Sports Arena... For Jersey...

After years of legal wrangling, with big developers versus individual interests versus neighborhood groups versus local government, it appears that Bruce Ratner's Atlantic Yards has been green-lighted. In addition to lots of low-income housing (blah blah blah) and mixed-use crap (blah blah), the centerpiece of the project is a giant sports arena... to house the New Jersey Nets, an NBA basketball franchise with a 2-22 record. Fabulous!

I honestly don't a weighty opinion on any of this—as long as it doesn't bring more traffic to Brooklyn Heights. Frankly, after years of wrangling to get an IKEA built in arguably decrepit Red Hook, Brooklyn, it turned out to be a boon for the borough and the neighborhood, thanks to a beautiful riverside park that the IKEA folks built, along with increased overall interest in an area that was little more than industrial waste.
