As a voting member of NARAS, sadly, the last several years have been marked more by my voting against a particular artist than voting for a deserving nominee. Checking this year's list, released on Wednesday, the times they are not a'changin'.
Beyoncé led with 10 nods, Taylor Swift landed eight, and Black Eyed Peas and Kanye West received six each. What more need I say?
Well, there's a little more. For Best New Artist, the noms are: Zac Brown Band, Keri Hilson, MGMT, Silversun Pickups and The Ting Tings. If that doesn't spell it out, I dunno what does. That category used to set the stage for the handful of acts that broke into the mainstream over the previous year, with promise to command the future. With the exception of Hilson (barely), not a single among these artists found mass appeal.
The one bright spot: Maxwell, who came out of nowhere, with six nominations. Whitney Houston: zero. At least they got that right.
2009... the year in music. Dejf fjlcmau... Oops, sorry, I nodded off there for a minute.
